Give 'em a cowbell or tamborine or any percussion gadget. Let them try playing & singing and see if they're any good.(I've found that some can't get it done).Let them know that they are BETTER at the instrument they are playing and redirect their energy towards that.If that doesn't work, disconnect their mic!JK...sometimes a recording played back to 'em does the trick...good luck! adios, steve

You do this: Very diplomatically and tactfully you say: "I think that your voice isn't appropriate for the type of music we do. You've got a unique voice, but it doesn't fit the type of music we do." < :

Try recording them singing, even on a little boom box. Usually, the recording will reveal what most people, even experienced, did not or could not hear.

Is she your girlfriend?------friend?

If it is, it is going to take a lot of tact; plus, you may have someone not talk to you for awhile. So, who is it?

Yeah I agree with the idea of recording them and then replaying it to them and hoping they realize for themselves. Still many people who are tone deaf won't even notice the difference, so good luck. If he has any idea he will how different his voice sounds to the outside world as compared to what he is hearing.

Personally, for myself it took me a while to get used to that. I spent many countless hours recording my original music and listening to my voice until I grew accoustomed to my own voice and it's range.

Tell them you respect them but they SUCK! But be gentle. Or tell them to audition for American Idol and they can find out they suck for themselves.

Krimson does indeed knock down a vox part or two.

Just be honest, because if you aren't you are doing this person a disservice. The business is tough and too many people think they have what it takes. It isn't just who you know, you actually have to have some talent to gain respect and though I have never experienced negativity regarding my own pipes, I'm sure it would be better to hear something like that from a friend than from someone in the business later on. If not, I liked the American Idol suggestion!

Hey all, new guy here.

To me, there is nothing like hearing a recording of yourself playing/singing to know where you stand. Also, having crappy or no monitors at all can make anyone sing off pitch.

At the same time, I've also seen where a band tries to have its vocalist sing something that does not suit their range and/or timbre. It doesn't always mean that they are a bad singer, just not suited for that style or song. Lots of vocalists try to sing a song they really love but just aren't suited for (I've made this mistake myself more than once...).

Instead of telling someone they suck, how about talking to them about how you don't think their range and timbre are right for this or that song (even if it ends up being all of them). This, combined with hearing their own voice should eventually lead them to realize there is a (as Miguel said) "fit" issue.

It boggles my mind how this thread pops up every now and then...a year after it was started.

I have played in a few bands like that. If I had to pick one weak point in many bands, it would be the singing. There are many monster players that just barely cut it when it comes to the singing. (no names please) Of course, the weakest link always determines the quality of the entire band. Play loud, turn down the volume and treble on the PA and hope that you can carry it with the instrumentals. In the meantime, look for a good singer. They are very hard to find.
